Iran
is one of the largest of the.
Persian Gulf States.
It has borders with 10 other states in the region
including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkey. Persia
(former name Persia till 1935) has seen the rise and
fall of a number of civilizations. Archaeological
studies during the first half of the twentieth century
indicate that as early as 10,000 BC, tribes lived on the
southern shores of the Caspian, one of the few regions
of the world which according to scientists escaped the
Ice Age. They were probably the first men in the history
of mankind to engage in agriculture and domestication of
animals. It was they and others who spread out shortly
afterwards along the
Zagros Mountains in central Iran
and founded the first center of civilization in the land
Oil was discovered in 1908. From that time on Iran
(meaning Land of Aryan) became of growing interests to
the great Powers, and the requirements of international
oil companies began to figure in Iranian life.
